Guided By Nature

There is rarely a need to look further than the natural world for design inspiration. Colour, shape, proportion and contrast are infinitely fascinating within the natural formations of the Earth and beyond.

Creative Process

Once upon a time, we were all artisans, botanists, woodworkers and storytellers. Organic and locally sourced materials were close at hand and laughter and song enlivened communal creative process.

Nowadays, creative process can be a solitary experience. A privileged experience perhaps. A solemn commitment and a sacrifice. For many, it is the path to joy no matter the cost and bread and cheese have always served well enough.

Natural and Affordable

I am very interested in creating beautiful, natural things for people at an affordable price point, whilst still maintaining quality. Socio-economic status should not preclude us from simple pleasures. I enjoy using silver, copper, natural stones, resin and glass as well as preserved flowers collected from my garden and hand-dried. They make an excellent kitchen brightener hanging there amongst the faerie lights.

Inspiration

Growing up a Lighthouse Keeper's daughter and later, a forest kid, ignited a lifetime of curiosity regarding the metaphysical aspects of the land and I have explored this in many ways. I am now making jewellery from my home studio here in Southern Tasmania, continuing an exploration of the pathways my Celtic ancestors have laid down for me.

MoCushla is named so after a Gaelic term of endearment meaning 'my darling' as well as 'blood of my blood' connecting both to loved ones and lineage, both of which are at the centre of my life.

Background

I have a background in writing, teaching and self-publishing. I recently completed a Master of Philosophy in Literature/Mythology, as well as a historical fiction novel exploring the cross-cultural meeting of Celtic and First Nations Australian mythologies, which is yet to be published. Nature-based stories continue to fascinate me and inspire my jewellery.
